IBM ThinkPad Question Internet Connection? - trouble connecting ibm t60 15-pin to tv

I bought an IBM ThinkPad at the flea market today and am having problems connecting to the Internet. I have wifi, so I tried to connect the Ethernet cable outlet on my laptop. Nothing works. Someone please explain in words I can understand? Thank you so so so so so so so so so so so so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
